CIRCADIAN RHYTHM OF CORTISOL AND ESTRADIOL IN HEALTHY WOMENby KARYN G. BUTLERAugust 2011Advisor: Dr. Jean E. DavisMajor: NursingDegree: Doctor of PhilosophyDaily variation in human processes and behaviors has been identified for centuries. Studyof these circadian rhythms demonstrates their role in human health. Sickness behaviors includealterations in affect, sleep quality and energy. The study of the relationship between circadianrhythms has been limited to isolated rhythms. The role of temporal relationships among rhythmshas received little attention. Sickness behaviors are prevalent in many disorders includingdepression, cancer, and autoimmune disorders. Two hormones that have been shown to play arole in the manifestation of sickness behaviors are cortisol and estradiol. To date the role of therelationship between cortisol and estradiol circadian rhythms and sickness behaviors remainsunknown. The purpose of this study is to explore the temporal relationship between the rhythms of cortisol and estradiol and its relationship to sickness behaviors. It was hypothesized that a cortisol-estradiol phase angle difference (PAD) would exist that would correlate with optimalaffect, sleep quality and energy. A small scale, comparative, correlational design was used to test the hypothesis. Asample of twenty-three university women (11 morning-types and 12 evening-types) between theages of twenty to thirty-five were recruited from an urban university. Salivary samples were

Development of Salivary Cortisol Circadian Rhythm and Reference Intervals in Full-Term Infants

BACKGROUND Cortisol concentrations in plasma display a circadian rhythm in adults and children older than one year. Earlier studies report divergent results regarding when cortisol circadian rhythm is established. The present study aims to investigate at what age infants develop a circadian rhythm, as well as the possible influences of behavioral regularity and daily life trauma on when the rhy...

Circadian rhythm of melatonin in postmenopausal asthmatic women with hormone replacement therapy.

OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to check if in postmenopausal women such a disease as asthma and use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) influence daily melatonin (MEL) secretion. MATERIAL AND METHODS Studies were performed in 55 asthmatics (treated and not treated with glucocorticosteroids) and 20 healthy postmenopausal women (aged 48-60) before HRT and after 6 months of transdermal 17be...

Investigating the effect of different light intensities in work environments on Circadian rhythm using animal model

Introduction: light intensity and duration are physical factors that affect hormone secretion and circadian rhythms. This study aimed to determine the effects of various light intensities on serum melatonin and cortisol levels.  Materials and methods: This experimental study was carried out on 32 male rats: Group 1 as the control group, received a brightness of 150 lux, and groups 2, 3, and ...

Women with hereditary breast cancer predispositions should avoid using their smartphones, tablets and laptops at night

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women, both in the developed and developing countries. Women with mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes have an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancers. Recent studies show that short-wavelength visible light disturb the secretion of melatonin and causes circadian rhythm disruption. We have previously studied the health effects of exposure...

Relationship Between the Cortisol-Estradiol Phase Difference and Affect in Women

Affective disorders impact women’s health, with a lifetime prevalence of over twelve per cent. They have been correlated with reproductive cycle factors, under the regulation of hormonal circadian rhythms. In affective disorders, circadian rhythms may become desynchronized. The circadian rhythms of cortisol and estradiol may play a role in affective disorders. The purpose of this study was to e...
